Founded in 2020, in Chicago, the mission of Barrio Blues Press is to elevate the voices of emerging writers and to help build a cooperative society. Visionaries for a better world will be given a voice through the press.

Beginning with Nation: A Poetry Book by Penned in the City (for the Chicago Freedom School); to Unity: Volume 1: A Magical Realism Anthology, an anthology of international writers, poets, and artists, aimed at raising money for Doctors Without Borders; to
Wolf Trek: A Post-Apocalyptic Werewolf Novelette's; to free-forever books for young and seasoned readers: Barrio Blues Press began its mission, summer 2020 and continues to thrive.

We are elated to have our first author, Misael Juarez, a Los Angeles Zapotec poet and rapper, signed on with Barrio Blues Press with his collection, My Spoken Word Wife: Playing for Keeps. This collection is a rich, complex book of radical poems. It is available for order on Amazon; read an online excerpt here.

Nightmare with a Twist! by contributors from Penned in the City is coming January 2023. This speculative fiction, poetry, and art anthology is helping fund the production and contributory copies and shipping costs for Unity, Volume 2: A Speculative Anthology.

In these ways, Barrio Blues Press will fulfill its mission and grow its scope. We are grateful for all the artists, authors, and volunteers who contribute to the press and for readers like you.

On My Spoken Word Wife: Playing for Keeps:
"The streets are mean, but the gentle heart of a poet conquers the rage and puts it on the page. Beat by beat, the poetry unfolds and reveals visions from a shaman’s heart. The Sacred Poet is back, and he’s got your back. The Ancestors speak truth and sing through Juarez’s words and declarations of freedom and liberation. "
